Previously unveiling plans for Europe’s first underwater restaurant, renowned international architecture firm Snøhetta now reveals its latest concept, “Svart,” the world’s first Powerhouse hotel situated just above the Arctic Circle.

With an emphasis on sustainability, this building will be the first to be built after the energy positive Powerhouse standard in a Northern climate, with its design’s yearly energy consumption reduced by approximately 85% compared to a modern hotel, and able to produce its own energy.

Flaunting a circular profile that extends from the shoreline by the foot of the Almlifjellet mountain and into the waters of the Holandsfjorden fjord, which also offers panoramic vistas of its surroundings — the construction is inspired local vernacular architecture in the form of the “fiskehjell” (A-shaped wooden structure for drying fish) and the “rorbue” (a traditional type of seasonal house used by fishermen), as the hotel’s supporting structure comprised of weather resistant wooden poles that stretch below the surface of the fjord reference the rorbue.

In addition, to keep the hotel energy positive, the roof is clad with Norwegian solar panels produced with clean hydro energy reducing the carbon footprint even further. The façades protect against insulation from the sun in the summer when the sun is high in the sky, removing the need for artificial cooling. During winter months, when the sun is low, large windows allow for the sun’s natural thermal energy to enter the structure, providing maximum insulation, as the circular design of the hotel, allows hotel rooms, restaurants and terraces to be strategically placed, and utilize the sun’s energy throughout the day and seasons.
